Glaucoma Screening

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the name of a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve. This damage is thought to occur due to an increase in pressure inside the eye.

The optic nerve transfers information about vision from the eye to the brain. If it is damaged, it can result in reduced vision, sight loss, and even blindness.

Glaucoma may be present without any symptoms, which is why screening is so important. Early identification and treatment of glaucoma can help to prevent vision loss.

Why should I have an eye examination?

During an eye test, an optometrist can check the health of your eyes and look for diseases including glaucoma. We advise all people above 60 years old to consider having their eyes examined by an optometrist every 2 years until they are 70 years of age, when they should be examined annually.
